KHALA BRANNIGAN
My work as an artist consists of stories related to human resilience. Growing up in New Mexico, I was stunned by the desert landscapes, big blue skies, and the gracious mountains. It’s as if the earth could speak a language louder than words, yet the culture that surrounded me was harrowing. Those contrasting worlds have inspired me to create movement that connects the earth’s death and rebirth cycles to the human experience. I create dystopian, ethereal worlds through dance performance, films, installations, writing, collaboration with other mediums, and teaching.

Work-in-Progress Showing
February 21st and 22nd, 7pm
at The Reef in Downtown Los Angeles
False Summits delves into the frustration of reaching what seems like the peak of a mountain, only to discover it’s just a lower point on the way to the true summit. This metaphor speaks to the connection between the body and the earth, mirroring our collective sense of progress amid global crises. While society may feel as though we’ve made strides toward lasting change, there are still many more challenges ahead, and we continue to move forward, one step at a time. In response to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, False Summits captures the profound grief that follows loss, and the way it intensifies in solitude. Through movement, song, and poetry, this new solo performance transforms grief into something meaningful.
