False summits

False Summits is solo work in progress performed at The Reef in Downtown, Los Angeles. Khala Brannigan choreographed, performed, and wrote this solo work as a part of the Cal Arts Residence at The Reef.

False Summits delves into the frustration of reaching what seems like the peak of a mountain, only to discover it’s just a lower point on the way to the true summit. This metaphor speaks to the connection between the body and the earth, mirroring our collective sense of progress amid global crises. While society may feel as though we’ve made strides toward lasting change, there are still many more challenges ahead, and we continue to move forward, one step at a time. In response to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, False Summits captures the profound grief that follows loss, and the way it intensifies in solitude. Through movement, song, and poetry, this new solo performance transforms grief into something meaningful.
